Welcome to our shortlist of 5 drones that are meant for the future.
But why? How can we classify a drone as good enough to last a long time?
Technology evolves at an alarming rate, especially in the drone industry, but some drones are meant to hold onto the timeline string that rushes into tomorrow.
If you buy the wrong drone, it may last you a couple of months, maybe a year at most, depending on how many times you fly it. Or even less. Some drones are just not meant to be used long-term.
But what we list here is different. It’s based on our experience, knowledge, tests, and previous purchases, so you can depend on these drones to last a long time.
Overview
If you’re looking for a drone to last you a long time for many years to come, the following are a few that will serve you well:
- DJI Mini 4 Pro – The newest mini drone, built for the future.
- DJI Mini 3 Pro – This previous version of the mini drone has already proven invaluable in lasting a long time.
- DJI Mavic 3 Pro – One of the best professional and commercial drones that will prove efficient for many years to come.
- DJI Air 2S – The previous version of Air 3; the Air 2S has already proven to last a very long time.
- DJI Avata – A hard, resistant, and excellent FPV drone to last for many years ahead.

- It comes with the next generation “Active Track”, the Active Track 360, which is a first on this drone.
- It’s a drone sub 250 grams that may not require registration with the FAA.
- It can film in vertical mode, perfect for social media platforms.
- Overall, it’s a drone packed with the latest features for the future.
- It’s excellent for portability, for easy travel, as it takes nearly no space.
❌ Cons
- The battery life could be improved over the earlier version.
- Such small drones may not be the best at wind resistance.
Product Overview
Released recently, the DJI Mini 4 Pro is the newest DJI drone and is one to hold up over the long term due to its new and top technology.
Many of the features previously seen only in professional drones such as the DJI Mavic 3 have now been transferred to this new “mini drone.”
From omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, a new advanced Active Track, excellent follow-me mode with advanced RTH, and so much ingenuity put into this small drone, the Mini 4 Pro is the first sub-250g drone in the world that has such features.
There’s simply nothing better currently in small drones.
DJI has succeeded big time with the “mini” line of drones, and all proved to be very efficient in their use over for the long-term, including the DJI Mini 2.
This hasn’t changed with the Mini 4 Pro, either. At the time of this article, two months in, this drone not only works better than everything we have this small but has proved as reliable as the predecessor drones.

Our Review
We were eager to get our hands on the next-generation “mini drone”, the DJI Mini 4 Pro. And we got it, most of us at Droneblog!
Quickly, this drone became one of our favorites, which is so unique when we look at how small it is.
It may not be the best in terms of camera quality if we compare it to the Air 2S or Mavic 3 Pro, but I simply love it.
The images are crisp and high quality, and the videos are so smooth with the same advanced 3-axis mechanical gimbal, it continues the tradition with the ability to create vertical content.

Benefits and Drawbacks
Let’s break the ice and dig deep down inside the workings of this beautiful drone. What can it do?
- The Mini 4 Pro is the most advanced sub-250-gram drone and contains some of the most advanced drone technologies nowadays.
- The omnidirectional sensing system is the first in the world in a “mini drone” and will help you avoid obstacles from any angle, keeping your drone safe from collisions.
- The new transmission system, DJI O4, is time-traveling from the future. It’s unbelievable to see how far this drone can fly and how easily it combats interference while receiving high-quality live feed on your RC screen.
- Even if this drone has a smaller CMOS compared to more professional ones, there’s no doubt it can be used for professional photography and video taking, definitely vlogging, maybe extreme sports, and surely it’s the one to choose for traveling.
- If you go with the Mini 4 Pro because it’s under 250 grams, expect that, at least at this time, in the United States to forego drone registration with the FAA (and in most countries around the world – please check your country’s drone laws) if you use it recreationally.

Not only is it a drone from the future, but with the reliability of DJI drones in general and the “mini” series, there’s no doubt this drone is our first recommendation if you’re looking for one to last you a long time.
But there has to be some drawback. I’m struggling to find some, but okay.
Because the drone is so small, don’t expect to fly it in very strong winds as you do with the Mavic 3 series or DJI Air 2S, which are much heavier and resist winds well.
And maybe it would been nice to see at least a 1-inch CMOS in this drone. But what we have is more than okay.
DJI Mini 4 Pro (with DJI RC 2)

» MORE: DJI Mini 3 Pro: One-Year Review (Video)
✅ Pros
- It’s a reliable “mini” drone that proved to be built for a long time; many pilots have had it since its release, and it still works perfectly fine.
- The camera is decent for semi-professional and amateur photographs and videos.
- It is capable of flying for a decent amount of time and more with the “plus” battery.
- This drone can also fly long-range. It’s not as good as Mini 4 Pro, but still, it’s above average as compared to many other drones.
- You can also take advantage of the many intelligent functions Mini 3 Pro has that have been improved over time, from the follow-me mode to different QuickShots methods.
- This drone weighs under 250 grams, which may not require you to register in the USA if you’re planning to use it for recreational purposes (always check your country’s drone laws).
❌ Cons
- At the time of writing this article, the Mini 3 Pro was 2 and a half years old.
- The camera quality falls behind some more recent drone models
- This drone does not have omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, unlike the improved Mini 4 Pro version.
Product Overview
Ever since its release, the Mini 3 Pro quickly became one of the most purchased drones in the world, with tens of thousands or more positive reviews across the world.
Even if it’s from the older generation, this drone proved to be more than reliable to challenge the hourglass of time. That’s why we wanted to include it here on our top list.
Since the Mini 4 Pro release, the Mini 3 Pro has been on sale at a discounted price, so if you like this drone and you’re not willing to invest more for any other, you surely cannot go wrong with it.
Most of us at Droneblog have this drone and can say with confidence you cannot go wrong with it.
» MORE: DJI Mini 3 Pro for Commercial Use (Explained)
Our Review
We love drones and we are obsessed with them, so we make drone purchases and test thoroughly to ensure accurate information. However, nobody told us to buy the Mini 3 Pro, but we all did because it’s simply such a great drone to use, especially if you’re traveling.
It takes nearly no space, the same as the Mini 4 Pro.
So, for those looking for a reliable drone that passes the test of time, this Mini 3 Pro is an excellent choice.
Now, of course, this will make you think: Should I get the Mini 4 Pro, which is the newest and best “mini” drone you can get but with a limited track-record, or the Mini 3 Pro, which has established its worth?
To answer this question, I recommend you check our comparison between the Mini 3 Pro and the Mini 4 Pro.
For now, we may not use this drone for commercial purposes or try to go for professional-type photography. But for a hobbyist or beginner, you simply cannot go wrong with it unless you’re aiming for the Mini 4 Pro.

Benefits and Drawbacks
Let’s see how we can place this drone on the list with its benefits and drawbacks:
- An excellent choice if you’re looking for a cheap, reliable, and more than decent drone for your travels, wherever we’re talking about backpacking or international travel via plane.
- In general, drones under 250 grams do not have to be registered in the United States and in many parts of the world for recreational flights. This is another benefit of the Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, and Mini 4 Pro drones. Please always check your country’s drone laws, and don’t just assume you don’t have to register it.
- The DJI Mini 3 Pro can fly for a decent amount of time and can benefit from two batteries, the same ones that work as well with the Mini 4 Pro. It is also decent at flying long-range and beats most drones on the market.
- With photography and filming, the Mini 3 Pro has been more than decent and has proven reliable since its release. It also uses a 3-axis mechanical gimbal for extremely smooth footage.
- The 3-way anti-collision sensors may help any beginners avoid possible crashes when flying this drone, a function that works well with its follow-me mode.
» MORE: DJI Mini 3 Pro – How to Factory Reset (Step-by-Step Guide)
However, if you choose to get the Mini 3 Pro as a drone to last you a long time, we have to look into a few drawbacks. None of them are serious enough to affect the ability of this drone to survive the challenge of time, but you have a right to know.
One drawback is the older technology it uses as compared with today’s Mini 4 Pro and Air 3; the Active Track is version 4.0, which is previous to the best one, and the camera may not be up to the standards.
Also, remember that you only have three direction sensors for anti-collision purposes.
3. DJI Mavic 3 Pro
Key Features
- Weight: 958 grams
- Camera: Three cameras:
- Hasselblad: 4/3 inch CMOS capable to photograph at 20MP resolution and film in 5.1k at 50fps or 4k at 120fps with 1-3x zoom
- Medium Tele: 1/1.3 inch CMOS capable of photographing at max 48 MP resolution and film in 4k at 60fps with a zoom of 3 to 7x
- Tele Camera: 1/2 inch CMOS that can photograph at 12MP resolution and film in 4K at 60fps while it can zoom up to 28 times (hybrid zoom)
- Max Flight Time: 43 minutes
- Max Range: 9.3 miles in the USA and 5 miles in Europe, China and Japan
- Obstacle Avoidance: Omnidirectional obstacle avoidance system
- Intelligent Functions: Active Track and APAS 5.0 with follow-me mode, Waypoints, and other smart functions, including QuickShots
- Compatible RC: DJI RC Pro, DJI RC, DJI RC-N1
» MORE: DJI Mavic 3 Pro Review (I have NEVER flown a drone that I enjoyed so much)
✅ Pros
- It’s one of the best professional consumer camera drones, and it comes with three cameras.
- It’s a professional drone made for experienced and commercial drone pilots that challenge the hourglass of time. But it can also be used by beginners.
- The Mavic 3 Pro features many intelligent functions, and the follow-me mode part of Active Track 5.0 is excellent, a great reason to consider it for professional filming.
- This drone is safe for anyone to use as it hosts binoculars and anti-collision sensors that cover any angle.
- It’s capable of flying long-range with the O3+ transmission system and can stay in the air for quite a long time with its battery.
- It’s compatible with one of the most professional radio controllers, the DJI RC Pro.
❌ Cons
- The price is high if you’re looking for a drone to last you a long time. But it’s high for a good reason.
- Flying such an expensive drone can be intimidating, especially for a beginner.
Product Overview
If you are a professional photographer or commercial drone pilot, at this time, there is no drone better than the Mavic 3 Pro unless you want to spend thousands more dollars on state-of-the-art drone equipment.
Released in May 2023, this drone is barely half a year old at the time of writing this article. And half a year is more than enough to have a conclusive answer.
After the success of the Mavic 3 and Mavic 3 Cine drones, the Mavic 3 Pro should be yet another drone to work for years ahead, whether you’re simply looking for an excellent hobbyist drone or for commercial applications.
The Mavic 3 Cine proved to be an excellent example in this scenario. But the Mavic 3 had some issues, since it was the first drone of the series. Still, it’s an excellent one, but nothing will compare with the “Pro” version. It simply cannot.
» MORE: DJI Mavic 3 Classic vs. Mavic 3 Pro (Here’s My Choice)
Our Review
When the Mavic 3 Pro was released, many of us at Droneblog bought it, and it became the main drone to be used for commercial purposes, as some of us are doing different commercial work with high-value clients.
We needed something reliable, something to be used even for years ahead. And I can say for certain that the Mavic 3 Pro is.
The physical performance of the Mavic 3 Pro is almost identical to that found in the Mavic 3 and Classic versions. But the camera is next-generation, thanks to the Swedish manufacturer, Hasselblad, for the 4/3-inch CMOS wonder.
This makes the drone an essential piece of equipment that other drones cannot even compare with.
And if you’re looking to capture something from afar, whether it’s a building, the crest of a mountain, or wildlife, this drone has you covered.
» MORE: DJI Mini 4 Pro vs. Mavic 3 Series (Here’s My Choice)
Benefits and Drawback
- Perfect for most types of applications, the 4/3 inch Hasselblad camera from the Mavic 3 Pro is not yet challenged by any other consumer drone. And on top of that, if you’re a wildlife or wedding photographer, say no more, as it has 28x zoom abilities.
- For all types of work, surely we can take advantage of the omnidirectional anti-collision sensors that prove to be excellent, especially when flying at close quarters with many objects around. You really don’t want to crash this drone, and neither does the drone – that’s why we are covered.
- The Mavic 3 Pro is one of the top drones if we need to capture night photographs or video. It even challenges the Autel EVO 2 Pro drone in low-light and night capabilities.
- Are you ready to fly long-range (while keeping the drone in visual line of sight, of course)? The Mavic 3 Pro has got your back. Not only is it more than capable, but it can easily combat interference and stay in the air for quite a while.
- As for the intelligent functions, the Mavic 3 Pro has them all: from low-light de-noising software to one of the latest Active Track and Follow-me versions and Waypoints; you can take it easy, and the drone will do the rest for you.
» MORE: DJI Mavic 3 Pro vs. Air 3 (Here’s My Choice)
But as a drawback, all these features and camera capabilities behind a long-lasting drone are part of a relatively high price that makes most of us think: Do I really need this drone? Can I justify my purchase?
Not long after the Mavic 3 Pro release, the DJI Air 3 and Mini 4 Pro were released, so they share many features with the more expensive Mavic 3 Pro but with the newest OcuSync 4.0 system.
Therefore, if you’re not looking specifically for the latest and best drone camera, then consider other options.

4. DJI Air 2S
Key Features
- Weight: 595 grams
- Camera: 1-inch CMOS capable of filming in 5.4k at 30fps and photographing at 20MP true resolution
- Max Flight Time: 31 minutes
- Max Range: 7.4 miles in the USA and 5 miles in Europe, China, and Japan
- Obstacle Avoidance: 4-way obstacle avoidance system
- Intelligent Functions: Active Track 4.0 with APAS, follow-me mode and waypoints (limited capabilities) and QuickShots
- Compatible RC: DJI RC, DJI RC-N1 DJI RC Pro
» MORE: DJI Air 2S – A Complete Real-World Review
✅ Pros
- It’s a reliable drone that has survived the test of time since its release in April 2021
- It comes with a sizeable 1-CMOS sensor that makes low-light and night photography superb, and it also offers a great dynamic range with the option to shoot in RAW.
- This drone is relatively lightweight compared to many others and can sustain some good wind resistance.
- The DJI Air 2S is able to fly long-range without issues for a decent amount of time, and it’s compatible with the most advanced consumer controller, the DJI RC Pro.
❌ Cons
- The technology may be a bit outdated by today’s standards, but the camera remains top-notch alongside a few professional drones.
- The DJI Air 2S cannot fly as long as many other drones, and with a 31-minute advertised flight time, expect to fly for 23-25 minutes at most.
Product Overview
Maybe you’re wondering why I didn’t include the newest DJI Air 3 instead of the Air 2S because it’s newer and has better technology, Active Track 5.0, and omnidirectional sensors on top of two cameras.
That’s because, at this time, we know the Air 3 has a few issues where photographs may look noisy and have chromatic aberration – nothing DJI cannot handle with firmware updates.
But right now, because of these issues and the Air 3 being a relatively new drone, it did not pass our test of time.
However, if you’re looking for the Air 3 a few months into the future, it may be a good option to choose instead of the Air 2S.
But the DJI Air 2S is exceptionally good, and many pilots have had it for years. It proved to be a reliable, good drone and has held steady until now.
The Air 2S is still an excellent drone even now at the beginning of 2024. And considering that we have a newer model, the Air 2S can often be found at a reduced price for sale, making it a good choice to start with, especially if you’re looking for a large sensor camera.
» MORE: DJI Air 2S in Extreme Weather (Explained)
Our Review
Some of us at Droneblog acquired this drone at its release and have it even now. Some others acquired it in the meantime.
That being said, we have used this drone in many different circumstances, from professional and commercial work, to travel with, and even as hobbyists.
The DJI Air 2S definitely survived the test of time, and even if you’re about to acquire it now, you should still be able to get support for this drone for the next few years and work as seamlessly as before.
I had the DJI Air 2S, and it was a great drone. Maybe “great” can’t be a justifiable measurement unit, so to detail a bit, it’s excellent in photography.
The Active Track 4.0 from Air 2S still rules over previous versions and proves very efficient, especially with the follow-me mode. As mentioned, it’s also compatible with the DJI RC Pro.
» MORE: DJI Air 2S Temperature Range (Explained)
Benefits and Drawback
- The large 1-inch CMOS sensor is excellent for semi-professional and professional photographs with great dynamic range and good low-light capabilities.
- The possibility to film beyond 4k at 5.4k may present opportunities if you’re looking for some professional videos to be done.
- The DJI Air 2S can still take advantage of a reliable and well-optimized Active Track, the 4th version that was improved over time.
- As with the other DJI drones, the DJI Air 2S can fly long-range; maybe the battery won’t last as long, but it would be enough to quickly get beyond the visual line of sight (which we don’t recommend).
» MORE: DJI Avata vs. DJI Air 2S (Here’s my Choice)
There are some drawbacks to this unit. I mean, in its time, it was a top-of-the-heap drone and still performs extremely well, but the technology is a bit behind.
This being said, we can’t really make these recommendations if we haven’t extensively tested and had these drones over the years to say for sure, “Yeah, it’ll last a long time.”
Another downside we can think of is the battery life, as it’s a bit below average of today’s professional standards.

5. DJI Avata
Key Features
- Weight: 410 grams
- Camera: 1/1.7 inch CMOS capable of recording videos in 4k at 60fps or 2.7k at 120fps
- Max Flight Time: 18 minutes in normal mode.
- Max Range: 6.2 miles in the USA, 3.7 in China, and 1.2 miles in Europe
- Obstacle Avoidance: None
- Intelligent Functions: Emergency Brake, Return to Home
- Compatible RC: DJI FPV Remote Controller 2, DJI Motion Controller, DJI RC Motion 2 and DJI FPV Goggles V2, DJI Goggles 2, DJI Integra
» MORE: DJI Avata – Hands-on Review (From an FPV Beginner)
✅ Pros
- It’s a fantastic drone that offers you an immersive experience with flying FPV with goggles.
- The DJI Avata is one of the few FPV drones capable of flying in normal, sport, and manual modes.
- For an FPV drone, the camera connected is one of the top, without having to attach a GoPro or other action camera.
- DJI Avata has duct guards, so it’s safe to fly in most environments
- This drone is crash-resistant and hard to break. It’s durable and was built to withstand time and abuse.
❌ Cons
- The drone has a bad center of gravity, so it may tumble if it is not flown well. This issue is a work in progress to be solved with firmware updates.
- The DJI Avata has low wind resistance.
- It cannot be purchased with the DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 to enjoy the full FPV experience, which you’ll have to acquire separately.
- It requires practice and training for many hours in FPV simulators to learn how to fly it in manual (acro) mode.
Product Overview
I think maybe you’re wondering why I have included the DJI Avata as a drone to last a long time, especially since this list can go on with the DJI Mini 2 SE, Mini 2, maybe, and just maybe, we can include the Air 3 or look even further than DJI drones.
That’s because Avata has proved to be a hard-as-a-rock drone that withstands abuse and many crashes and encounters; the drone will still fly.
It was heard of the duct guards cracking in major impacts or maybe a propeller breaking, but I haven’t heard much of the Avata simply failing because the ESC or flight controller burns out.
So, it does depend on how you maneuver the drone and take care of it, but it surely can hold up to more abuse than any standard DJI or non-DJI drones, especially if you’re crashing it often when looking to take the most challenging videos (we’re still talking minor to moderate crashes. No drone survives a meteor-strike type of crash on concrete).
And with all the features this drone has, I’m underlining the ability to fly it not only in manual (acro) mode but in normal and sport mode and take advantage of the excellent resistance and immersive VR experience.
This was the entry point for many drone pilots to get into FPV. This or the DJI FPV.
But the DJI FPV didn’t make the cut for the opposite reason. If you drop it on the floor, you’ll collect it with a dustpan. It’s like it’s made of glass.
So here it is – DJI Avata – an excellent FPV drone that can fly as a standard GPS drone, which is made to hold on for many years to come.
And it can freestyle; within limits, but this drone can freestyle.
» MORE: Can You Fly DJI Avata Without Goggles? (Explained)
Our Review
I love FPV. I’m an FPV kind of person, so I had to slip this drone here; well, that’s not the reason, but DJI Avata appears to be a unique drone, surely not made for photography but with great filming capabilities.
I have used the DJI FPV more because I have had it for a longer time, but as for the Avata, if you’re into challenging yourself to learn FPV and have an immersive experience, this drone is made to last.
I’m trying to be careful with my drones, FPV or non-FPV. I don’t often crash, but I don’t risk much, either. But if you’re a person who likes to take risks, I can hear Avata in the corner shouting, “Pick me, pick me!”
Yes, Avata has its own issues, but if you’re willing to overlook those, Avata could earn an even higher spot on this shortlist.
Avata was, and is, for me, one of my favorite FPV drones. I will continue flying until it breaks into pieces, and even then, I will order a new frame, put it back together, and continue flying.
» MORE: Is DJI Avata Worth It? (All You Need to Know)
Benefits and Drawback
- DJI Avata is a very safe drone to fly, especially in closed environments, close to people, forests, and places where standard drones cannot fly, because of the duct guards
- Its camera is top-quality when we consider other FPV drones. No other FPV drone has an internal camera better than Avata.
- It’s an excellent drone even for beginners – you can fly it in normal mode until you accommodate yourself with the goggles, learn acro on FPV simulators, and then challenge yourself to something extraordinary.
- Well, it’s safe to say that Avata, as we already mentioned, withstands the test of time – it has good crash resistance, and many pilots still have this drone even after nearly one year and a half – and it works more than well.
- If you feel you have lost control of this drone, with a push of a button and a function called “emergency brake,” the drone should come to a full stop, switch to normal mode, and hover in the air, awaiting further commands from the pilot.
- Avata has one function called “head tracking,” where with the motion controller and DJI Goggles 2 or Integra, when flying in normal mode, the Avata direction and camera change as per how you shift your head, introducing the full VR experience.
» MORE: How to Use DJI Avata Simulator (Explained)
But we have to mention again and underline all the drawbacks of this drone, which pushes a few pilots away.
Since it was released, it has had an issue: if you take sharp corners or fly it in strong winds, DJI Avata tumbles and falls out of the sky. With many firmware updates, it introduced a recovery process similar to “emergency brake,” but sometimes this doesn’t work as expected.
Many updates later, the chances of hitting the ground if this drone tumbles decreased significantly. But yet another issue came out: in rare circumstances, some drone pilots experienced their Avata simply flying away in one direction while the controller was unresponsive.
But all those are very rare cases; still, we felt the obligation to mention it.
Other than that, Avata is a drone made for long term.

Possible ongoing issues
We all strive to write and offer you the best information, but at times, there could be ongoing issues with these drones that are out of control, from firmware to hardware.
At Droneblog, we stay in communication with each other all the time and share information and experiences. No team members with their drones reported any of the following issues.
But we want to be transparent in this matter. No drone is perfect, so here’s what we know:
- DJI Mini 4 Pro: There is a 120-meter limit on Mini 4 Pro, while all DJI drones allow up to a height limit of 500 meters. This issue has been solved with the latest controller firmware update. Also, the battery may get hot if you start the drone and don’t fly it; this is to be expected, but further firmware updates may help with energy control when the drone doesn’t fly.
- DJI Mini 3 Pro: For more information, we recommend checking our Mini 3 Pro issues article; there are no other significant issues reported with the Mini 3 Pro.
- DJI Mavic 3 Pro: In very isolated cases, some drone pilots reported a loss of connection with DJI RC or the connection to be spotty at times. Also, some pilots encountered “buffering issues” after they stopped recording with the drone. DJI is aware of the issue and is working on a fix via firmware updates.
- DJI Air 2S: No issues have been reported lately with the DJI Air 2S, but ensure you run the latest firmware version.
- DJI Avata: For the DJI Avata issues, we recommend reading the above section on “Avata Benefits and Drawbacks.”
Conclusion
It’s no surprise to see all our recommendations to be DJI drones, and no, we are not sponsored by them – DJI simply manages to create high-quality, resilient, and top-notch types of drones.
So what we mentioned here are drones that are made to last over time, whether we’re talking about newer technology or older drones. They are simply the best in this matter.
